The Urban Morphology of Hyderabad, India: A Historical Geographic Analysis

In this research, I examined over 300 years of urban growth in Hyderabad, India, using remote sensing, GIS, and historical maps. My work traces how the city’s urban form shifted from a north-south orientation under British influence to an east-west pattern shaped by globalization and the rise of the tech sector. I used digitized historical maps and Landsat imagery to quantify built-up area changes from 1687 to 2019. The study reveals how colonial planning, Islamic urban design, industrialization, and modern infrastructure projects each left distinct spatial imprints on the city—offering valuable insights for planners in rapidly growing cities across the Global South.
